5 Things Every Working Mom Should Do Each Week

5 Things Every Working Mom Should Do Each Week

I want to back to my twenty-five-year-old self and slap her for ever thinking she was busy.  If being busy means that I had to wake up twenty minutes earlier to beat traffic on the way to spin class. Then yea, I was busy.   Being a working mom is another-level busy. You are literally always on, from the moment that you wake up until you finally get to crawl into bed.   However, I have picked up on a few strategies over the years that help me calm some of the chaos and bring order to my working mom life.   Here are five things that I do every Sunday to help ensure a successful week.

#1 Grocery Shop– I used to hate going grocery shopping on the weekends because it is always crazy. That was until our grocery store started offering online ordering and curbside delivery. I go to the app, add everything to the cart, and when it is ready they bring it right out to my car. Lazy? Maybe. Convenient? Absolutely! I highly recommend that you utilize this service if it is available at your grocery store. Not only has it helped me save time and patience (not having to bring two toddlers into the grocery store), but it has cut our grocery bill down as we;;. It eliminates a lot of duplicative items and impulse purchases. A win for the working mom!

#2 Meal Prep– I have recently started meal prepping and it is a game changer. I’m not as hardcore as others when it comes to meal prepping, but the little bit that I do really helps the week run much smoother. As soon as I get home from the grocery store, I wash, dry, and chop all of the produce. I also portion out some of the fruits and veggies for snacks and lunches for the week. I also take some time and throw some chicken in the Instant Pot and boil a dozen eggs. Having these items ready and handy keep us eating healthy in a hurry! These containers are great for meal prepping and getting lunches portioned out for the week.  I also have five baskets (one for each work week-day) and I put all of the non-perishable ingredients and printed out recipes in them for the week’s dinners. When it is time to cook, I just pull out the basket and am ready to go. I’m not a very good cook so this has helped keep me organized and prepared for busy weeknight meals.

#3 Outfit Prep– Another working mom saving grace is outfit prep. Each Sunday I lay out everyone’s outfits for the week, including mine. For myself, I lay out each outfit with accompanying shoes, accessories, and undergarments. For the kids, I have the outfit, undergarments, socks, and shoes if different than their ordinary wear shoes. I make sure that everything is pressed and ready to go for those hectic mornings. I could not believe how much stress this has taken off of me. You never realize how much time and energy is spent deciding what to wear and getting the outfit together until you don’t have to do it anymore. It is a lifesaver with the kids because the clothes are organized by day (these hanging organizers work great!) so they just go to the day, pull out their clothes, and get dressed. Independent kids are magical to a busy working mom.

#4 Plan & Schedule– Spend some time on Sunday reviewing yours and your family’s calendar for the upcoming week. Make sure that you have a plan for getting the kids to and from school and activities and that any work/social outings are worked out. I love the Cozi app for coordinating schedules and communicating upcoming events with the family. Try the Cozi Family Organizer today. It’s FREE! I also suggest building out a schedule for the entire week, down to the hour. Having this on paper (or electronically) will give you control over the week and help ease unnecessary stress. Make sure to carve out time for things think exercise and date nights with the hubby. Having time allocated for these activities ensures that you can partake guilt free and actually relax, which can be difficult for working moms to do.

Get Cozi - it's free!

#5 Take Care of Any Tasks– Try to take care of any task or errand that could potentially come up throughout the upcoming week. Need to get gas? Buy a birthday gift for next Saturday’s birthday party? Those small tasks creep up and not only cause undue stress but they can derail your best-laid plans. You will feel much better going into the week with things already checked off your to-do list. Planning equals happiness!

What other suggestions do you have for working moms? Any tasks that you complete that set you up for a successful week?

The Best Gifts for Working Moms

The Best Gifts for Working Moms

Need a gift idea for the working mother in your life?   Check out these gifts guaranteed to make her smile.

Babysitting

Seriously.  Ask any working mother what she wants most and 99% of the time she will say time to herself. Working moms simply never have time to do nothing. I can’t tell you the last time I sat on my couch and binged on Netflix. Pure bliss.  So, offer to take the kids off her hands for a day or two. Not only does this cost nothing but she will become eternally grateful.  Win-win.

Weekly/Monthly Planner

I am a planner addict. I feel that writing down my priorities and schedule brings me a sense of control and accomplishment.  I strongly believe that everyone should use planners and the prettier the better!  I love Day Designer planners. I have used them for several years now and I love them more and more.  Planners also provide a great way to document your life and get your thoughts and feelings on paper.   There are so many cool planner accessories available now which makes a planner a great creative outlet as well.

Fire HD 10 Tablet with Alexa

I love curling up on my couch and reading a good book or surfing on my tablet.  Any mindless activity is amazing at the end of a busy workday.  I love the Fire tablet because it is affordable and super functional. I am Amazon girl to the core and I love that is is all synced to my Amazon account. Score a great deal on this on Black Friday!

All the Coffee

Yes, I’m about at basic as they come. I love all things coffee. Gift me with a Starbucks gift card and I will love you forever.  Not only does coffee keep me alive and somewhat sane, but it is also one of the only luxuries I have in my life at the moment.  Between pressing work deadlines and screaming toddlers, I don’t have much “me time”. However, one of the best times of the week is on Saturday mornings when I head out, grab my iced coffee,  and cruise the aisles of target sans kids. All moms deserve this. She will think of you everytime she gets that sweet taste of luxury.

YETI Rambler Vacuum Insulated Tumbler

Moms outside of a Starbucks environment seldom enjoy a warm cup of coffee. I start my day with a warm cup of heavenly goodness then all hell breaks loose the moment my kids wake up.   Sounds like “Mommy hold me!”, “Mommy, I want popcorn!”, “Mommy, wipe my butt please!”,  fill my once quiet home.  I swear my kids have a sensor for when I sit on the couch to enjoy my coffee and watch the news.  IT NEVER HAPPENS.   That is why every mama needs a YETI Rambler cup. They keep your beverages hot (or cold) for hours.

Amazon Echo

I am obsessed with my Echo and Alexa.   I’m pretty certain that Alexa is going to run the world soon (or at least my household). The capabilities are endless for what this little machine can do for a working mom.  There are hundreds of uses for the Echo and Alexa technology.  She can play your favorite music, provide you with news and weather updates, serve as alarms and reminders, manage your shopping list, and even control your lights and appliances (with connected Smart devices). This Echo (or any Alexa enabled device) is the perfect gift for working moms.  Anything to make her life a tad easier.

LifeAround2Angels Bath Bombs Gift Set

Self-care is super important. Self-care is also one of the first things that we put on the back burner as working moms. We are just so busy that we feel we don’t have the time to treat ourselves.  If you have a working mom in your life, you need to force her hand to take care of herself a little better. Otherwise,  she never will.  These little bath bombs are amazing and a great way to do just that. Slide into the tub with one of these and watch your stress soak away.  They smell divine and will leave your skin feeling silky and smooth.  There are 12 different bombs that provide a different experience ranging from “Fun on the Beach” to “Victorian Rose”.    Pair this set with a bottle of wine and you have the perfect gift for a working mom!

Cozy Heated Poncho

I  don’t know any mother that wouldn’t love to cozy up in this heated poncho blanket.  Now pair this up with a good book and kid-free house and you have one happy woman.  This is so soft and luxurious and perfect for cold winter nights.

House Cleaning from Amazon Home Services

What is the hands-down best gift that you can get for a working mom?  A housecleaner.   Best. Gift. Ever. If fact, if I opened this up on Christmas morning, I would be brought to tears.   The very last thing that I want to do when I get home from work is scrub toilets. I want to play with my kids, talk to my husband, and just sit on my butt (I know, I’m funny and delusional).  Amazon makes it super easy to gift housecleaning services with their Home Services program.  You can do a one-time cleaning or a couple sessions, whatever you would like. This will be a gift that will not be soon forgotten, promise!

Top Alexa Skills for Working Moms

Top Alexa Skills for Working Moms

Disclaimer: As an Amazon affiliate, I earn a small commission from qualifying purchases.
Updated September 18th, 2021
Do you have a possession that you just couldn’t live without? Something that you just don’t know how you survived without it?  For me, that is my Amazon Alexa.
My entire family uses Alexa so much that she has become a bonafide member of our family. Welcome to the future, my friends.
PS. If you don’t know what Alexa is, Alexa is Amazon’s AI Virtual Assistant that is accessed in Amazon devices such as the Echo Plus, Echo, Echo Dot, and Amazon Fire Stick with Alexa Remote.
As a working mom, Alexa is certainly a lifesaver. Here are 10 Alexa skills for working moms that are guaranteed to simplify your life.

Bulletin Board

One of the top Alexa skills for working moms is the Bulletin Board feature.  Sticky notes? That is so 2017.  With the bulletin board feature, you can simply tell Alexa to leave a message for other members of your household.   Leave a note reminding your spouse to pick up your kids from swim lessons, leave a note for your kiddos to be good for their babysitter, whatever your heart desires.

Calendar

With the calendar feature, you can connect your supported calendar (i.w. Google Calendar, Outlook, etc.) to Alexa so she can act as your personal assistant.  Ask Alexa “what is next on my calendar?” or “what does my day look like tomorrow?” to get a rundown of your scheduled activities. While I  am packing lunches for the next day I  ask Alexa what is on the calendar the next day so I am always on top of things.

Flash Briefing

It is hard to stay up to date on current events as a working mom. My television is stuck on Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood 99.999% of the time and my car playlist is filled with the Moana soundtrack or Kids Bop. Without Facebook and Alexa, I would literally have no idea what is going in the world (which is actually nice sometimes).  There are several news outlets that you can get briefings from such as NPR, CNN, and theSkimm.  I love being able to hear the news that I want to hear while I’m getting stuff done around the house.

Shopping List

As a working mom, my mind is always spinning and my attention span is non-existent on most days.   I have the best intention of writing things down on my shopping list but life happens.  The Amazon Echo is an amazing solution to this.  While running after your toddler,  you can quickly tell Alexa to add something to your shopping list. It then compiles these items and keeps a running list ewin the Alexa app.  When you are at the store you can just glance at your app and see what you need.  Easy- peasy.  What I love most about this app is that my entire family can use the shopping list so if my husband needs deodorant, he can easily add it to the list.  It has been much easier to manage our groceries with the Shopping List skill.

Ordering

Amazon couldn’t make it easier to shop with them if they tried. I wouldn’t be surprised if in a few years you don’t even have to physically order something they just get a sense that you need it and it arrives on your doorstep.  For now, you just have to tell Alexa to order something and she orders it for you.  Seriously.  That is all.  Me-  “Alexa, order me baby wipes.”. Boom.  Done.    It’s pretty amazing how simple Alexa makes it for working moms.

Blue Prints

Alexa actually gives you the ability to create a skill with the Blue Print feature.  I  have built a skill that anytime I  ask Alexa if it is bedtime, she responds “yes, time to go to bed kids”. And you know what, my kids listen to Alexa more than me.   I also built a skill to pick who has to take a bath first (because that is a thing to argue about apparently). I  ask Alexa “whose turn is it to take the bath first?” and Alexa will randomly choose one of my kids.  Argument closed.  There are so many potential applications with the ability to create your own skill.

Time Outs

Alexa will even put your kids in time-out.  Enable the Time-Out skill,  set the duration of the timeout, and Alexa does the rest. It allows you to set a timeout for up to 10 minutes. For the duration of the timeout, it will remind the guilty party every minute to remain quiet and will even praise them for a job well done. Your kiddos may even be more likely to whine and argue less about it. Sure, go ahead and argue with a robot. See where that gets you, kid.

Baby Stats

Baby Stats is an amazing skill for those with a baby.  Those silly paper logs are a thing of the past, track everything with the help of Alexa.  Baby Stats lets you track your due date, stool, wet, feedings, weight, pumpings, kick counts and sleep. You only need to track the stats you care about. There is the ability to add multiple devices so you can track the stats wherever you have an Alexa-enabled device. You also have the ability to view the stats via an online viewer. You have enough to worry about when you have a newborn, let Alexa take care of some of the load.  Can she cover the night waking sessions, too? No, darn.

What to Expect

Expecting?  You have to enable the What to Expect skill for Alexa.  What To Expect guides you through pregnancy day-by-day and week-by-week. Just ask Alexa What To Expect every day, and you’ll get exciting updates about your pregnancy or newborn, plus all-new, useful tips to feel prepared and in control – helping you achieve a happy, healthy pregnancy. All this without needing to read, leaving more time for Netflix or sleep. Alexa for the win!

Skills for Ordering Pizza

Another amazing Amazon skill for working moms?   The Domino’s and Pizza Hut skills which allow you to order pizza right from your Alexa device. You can order pizza while you are folding clothes or chasing down a naked toddler.  Again, what would I do without Alexa?

Working Mom: 5 Tips for Easier Work Travel

Working Mom: 5 Tips for Easier Work Travel

When I was putting myself through college, I worked as a waitress at the airport. I remember watching the women business travelers and thinking of how fun and glamorous that life would be.  Well, I’m now that traveler, and I have to tell you it’s not that fun and it’s not that glamorous.  Traveling as a working mom can be a stressful, guilt-ridden, hot mess. It doesn’t have to be. Work travel can be an enjoyable experience and help you catch some “me” time and allowing your kids to form a tighter bond with your spouse.  Follow these tips to make work travel easier on everyone.

Preparation is Key

The moment you find out you have a travel commitment, start planning.  I have found that you really can’t prepare enough. I plan out every detail of who will be watching my kids, when, and where.  I try to always have a backup plan because, well you know, life.  Let your partner and family members know as early as possible so they can start planning as well.

Stock Up

I always make sure that I go to the store and get anything that my family could possibly need while I’m traveling for work.    I’m pretty sure my husband thinks that toilet paper and diapers appear out of thin air.  My confidence level is not high that he would know when to get said items or where to buy them.    While part of me wants to leave him high and dry so he can live a day in my life, I love my children (and him) so I just do it for them.   At the very least it provides me peace of mind so I can focus on my work while I’m gone and not if my house has adequate toilet paper.

Meal-Plan

I try to leave a very detailed meal plan while I’m gone to take the guesswork out of meal time. Sometimes they follow the plan, and sometimes they eat pizza and popcorn for three days straight.  Whatever makes them happy. At least I have that peace of mind I so desperately need when I’m away.  Before my trip,  I run to the grocery store and get any items that they may need while I am gone, including snacks.  I like to wash and portion out as much as I can so it easier for them to just grab whatever they need. I like to make it as easy as possible for my husband, it helps alleviate some of that dreaded guilt and stress.

Stay Connected

I always look for ways to stay connected while I am gone.   Whether it be a little surprise I leave for them to find or notes that I leave for them in their lunchbox. Little things to helpTechnology makes it much easier to stay connected. I try to stay connected through sending pictures back and forth.  My son is really into trains so when I was taking the tram to my concourse, I made sure to snap a pic and send to him. It makes me feel that he is included in my adventures.  The highlight of my day is our nightly FaceTime sessions.  Although, I will admit my first Facetime session with my oldest was a disaster. It was my first time away from him so I was already feeling incredibly emotional. We get on FaceTime and he starts sobbing hysterically the moment he sees me. He was sobbing, I was sobbing, and my poor husband was trying to pick up the pieces. Hot mess.  Moral of the story is just doing what is best for you and your kids. If you or your kids aren’t ready for FaceTime, don’t FaceTime. You want to try to minimize any discomfort as much as possible for everyone’s sake.

Make it Fun

I’m not above providing positive reinforcement (ahem, bribery) for my children. In fact, this makes my working mom world go ’round.  We have started a tradition of bringing home a little toy/souvenir from each of my work trips. I typically just pick up something in the airport on the way home.   My kids love this and look forward to it every time.  I get to make my kids happy thus alleviating my mom guilt, they get a fun new thing.  Win-win!   I also try to get a souvenir that is specific to the area that I traveled, turning it into a teachable moment.    If you don’t want to buy your kids something (I get the whole “I can’t stand one more thing in my house” thing), plan a special outing when you get back so you all have something to look forward to.  A trip to the park, library, or family movie night would do the trick.

Why Mompreneurs Make Excellent Moms

Why Mompreneurs Make Excellent Moms

Guilt is that nagging ever-constant feeling for every working mother.   Entrepreneur moms (or mompreneurs for short)? I’ll take that guilt and double it.  A large part of this guilt is that mompreneurs often don’t have definite start and end-times which blur the lines between work and home.  There is ALWAYS something you could be doing to grow your business or help your family. Typically,  mompreneurs are mere steps away from their home-office or computer which makes it very tempting to add more tasks to their day.   However, all of these days filled with sweat, tears, and guilt are not in vain. Being an entrepreneur can actually make you a better mom. Here are 6 benefits of being a mompreneur.

Efficient

Let’s face it,  mompreneurs are efficient.  Many mompreneurs juggle their family, homes, day-jobs, side hustles, friends, and more.   This requires them to be laser focused on what needs to be done and how it can be done most efficiently.  There is no wasted time here!   Need time-management tips, seek out a mompreneur!

Resourceful

It takes a village to raise both a family and a business. Mompreneurs know where and when to get help when it needed.  They typically have a network of experts at their fingertips to help them with whatever happens to come up. Mompreneurs are also very resourceful with technology.   They look for ways anywhere they can to make their lives easier. Resourcefulness is an essential skill to have and (even better) pass along to your children.

Your Best Self

Mompreneurs have the opportunity to be their best selves. Owning your own business is challenging, exciting, and provides you an essential creative outlet.  The sense of accomplishment that you get from growing your business from the ground up permeates into all other areas of your life. You are more confident, happy, and fulfilled.  Best of all, your family sees this confidence and pride .They are just as proud of you as you are!

Role Model

I was very lucky to have entrepreneurial women in my life that I was able to look up to.  For example, my grandmother grew up in the moutains of Kentucky and never went past the 8th grade until later in life. After she had her children, she went back to school, earned her GED, and went on to own several rental properties.  The example that she set was profound. She taught me that you can do anything that you set your mind to and that women can and should be business owners.  I hope that I am passing a similar message on to my children and nieces and nephews. Too often, we think of the negative effects that our businesses have on our families, we don’t pay enough attention to the positive impact that it has. You are playing an important part in empowering our future generation!

Financial Security

Earning potential is one of the main reasons that mompreneurs start their own business (as it should be!). This income is super important and beneficial to the household finances. Whether you are the sole-breadwinner or just earn a little extra spending money, the money that you earn from your business helps provide for your family and afford them opportunities that wouldn’t exist otherwise.  Something you should be very proud of!

Build a Legacy

Most business owners dream of building a business that will live on and continue to help others long after they are gone.  They want to be known for something and have made an impact.  Being a mompreneur affords you the opportunity to do just that.  Building a business with values and principles that aim to help solve other people’s problems is the key to building a legacy and giving your family something to be proud of for years to come.  You rock mompreneur!

The Struggles of Having a Speech Delayed Child

The Struggles of Having a Speech Delayed Child

From an early age, we could tell that my son was extremely intelligent. I loved reading the development checklists the first year of his life because he was always ahead of the game. We beamed with pride with every milestone we checked off. Then came time for him to start talking. Nothing. We waited, growing anxious for him to start chattering away. We talked to him, asked him questions, read countless books, everything that we were supposed to do but he still wouldn’t talk. I had this gut feeling that he would need some extra help and he did. He had a fairly significant expressive language delay. What I didn’t realize at that point was all of the additional struggles and challenges we would encounter with our speech-delayed child.

Fear- All parents have worries about their children from time to time. When my son started trailing behind in his language development, that worry turned to fear. Would he ever talk? Would he be able to communicate effectively and make friends? I started scrutinizing his every action and comparing it to a chart I had found on the autism spectrum. I put on a brave face but inside I was scared. Would my baby be okay?

Embarrassment- Let me be clear, I am in no way embarrassed of my child. He is absolutely perfect in my eyes. However, I sometimes find myself feeling embarrassed for him. I hate when he is trying to communicate with someone and they just don’t understand him so he repeats himself countless times. I feel so bad for him when I can tell he is trying to tell someone something but the words just don’t come out right. When other kids don’t want to play with him because they can’t carry a conversation. My heart aches when I hear other kids make comments about how he can’t talk right because I know he can hear those comments too. I know his little heart aches right along with mine.

Guilt– If I had a dollar for every time I blamed myself for his speech delay, I could afford a live-in speech pathologist. Did I not talk to him enough when he was a baby? Did I not read to him enough? Did we give him too much screen time? Was it that glass of wine I had before I knew I was pregnant? These were questions I asked myself almost every day, and I still find myself asking. I finally realized that it didn’t matter what caused it and all that really mattered was how we can help him now. I try to put all of my mental energy into the resolution versus placing blame on myself. It is a work in progress. Being a working mom comes with enough guilt, I wasn’t prepared for this added guilt.

Time-Consuming– This was a big surprise for me. I had no idea how time-consuming having a speech delayed child would be. My son started early intervention right before he turned two. He had so many assessments, evaluations, doctor appointments, hearing tests, IEPs, that I honestly lost count. This was all before he even started receiving speech services. No sooner than we got comfortable and in a groove, he had aged out of our state program and had to enter the school districts program. We had to start the process all over again. It felt like I had taken on a second job. As a working mom I really struggled with fitting everything in, luckily I have a flexible job.  Through this process, I have gained an even greater amount of respect for mothers of special needs children. I have no idea how they are able to keep up with everything. They are miracle workers.

Frustration- My son gets easily frustrated and would have outbursts. He would scream, throw things, bite, and hit. Granted, he was only 2 but he seemed to have more of a temper than other kids his age. I learned that is a common characteristic of speech delayed children. Because they can’t communicate the way they need to, they feel the need to get physical and lash out. When he was 2 1/2. We put him in a Montessori school to get him socialization and expose him to more language. It was horrible. He got a note home almost every single day for his temper. Seriously?! I thought I had at least 10 years before I had to start worrying about talking to the principal. Eventually, we realized that it just wasn’t working out and took him out to give him some more time to work on his speech and behavioral issues. Luckily, as his speech improved, so did his temper. Not only do you have to worry about your child talking but you also have to worry about their behavior. So hard.

Delays in Other Areas- As I mentioned, my son is very bright. He self-taught himself the alphabet, how to count to 100+, and to read all by the age of 3 1/2. However, he also has delays in other areas like coordination and potty training. When he would try to put his clothes on, he was so uncoordinated and awkward. It was almost like his mind wasn’t communicating with his body effectively. In fact, this is so common that our pediatrician warned us that he would have delays in this area as well. With potty training, he was 3 1/2 before he even showed interest in potty training. He seems to be all caught up right now but we were totally unprepared for all of the other developmental delays that are associated with speech delays.

Bonding– Throughout all of this, I have a very special spot in my heart for this sweet little boy. I understood his language long before others were able to and as a result, we share this very special bond. I have been rooting for him and cheering him on from the very beginning and I think he deeply understands that. We have been fighters from the very beginning and have a very special relationship because of it. There is a silver-lining in everything.

For all the moms out there with speech-delayed children, keep fighting the good fight. It is an emotional roller-coaster. One minute you are in tears because you feel so bad for your child and the very next you are over the moon because they said a four-word sentence. Hold on to those joyful moments. Be kind and fair to your child. Be kind and fair to yourself and know that this too shall pass.

Do you have a speech delayed child? What have you found to be the most surprising or challenging?

Let’s be friends! Check out Darling CEO on Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, and Instagram.

Must Have Apps for Working Moms

Must Have Apps for Working Moms

Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links. Purchases made through these links may result in a commission.

As a working mom (and just a mom in general), I am in constant search of added convenience in my life. While being a millennial mommy has its disadvantages (i.e. judgy social media moms, internet trolls, etc.), it does have some incredible advantages in the way of technology.

We have an infinite amount of resources right at our fingertips to make our lives a little easier.

Here are some of my favorite apps for working moms.

Starbucks App

Coffee is my friend.  That is why the Starbucks mobile app is one that I use almost daily. What I love best about the app is mobile ordering, which is pretty much the best thing since sliced bread.  With mobile ordering, you can simply place your order and then pick it up in the designated mobile order area.

No waiting in lines? Whaaat?!  I also love that you can customize your drinks however you like it and save it as a favorite.  You can also save your favorite drink order as a Siri shortcut for iPhone users.  They couldn’t make getting your morning coffee any easier.

Evernote

I am a huge Evernote fan. I use it for both work and home. You are able to store important documents, information, and pictures in one place.  I like to keep all of the families school, doctors, and sports info stored in Evernote so I always have access to it when I need it.  I love that it backs up the info so it is nice and safe in the cloud.   Evernote has saved me many times!

Cozi

Cozi is a perfect app for busy working moms. The family organizer app helps coordinate and communicate everyone’s schedules and activities, track grocery lists, manage to-do lists, plan ahead for dinner, and keep the whole family on the same page.

My husband travels a lot during the week so we barely see each other.  Before we started using Cozi, it was really hard to coordinate schedules. We would often forget to tell each other about important dates or events.  Now, I can just enter it into the family calendar and it will automatically send notifications to my husband and anyone else that is linked to your account. It’s perfect for grandparents, nannies, and caregivers as well!

Plus most of Cozi’s features are completely free! If you download one app, I would highly recommend that you give this one a try.

Amazon App

Where would I be without Amazon Family? I try to buy as much as I can from Amazon because it is a working mom’s savior. Running out of diapers? After a few clicks,  diapers will be on your door step in two days.  Need a gift for a birthday party coming up this weekend? Voila, doorstep!

With Amazon Family, you get a 20% discount on diapers subscriptions and other essential baby/kid supplies.   I also love this app because you can easily comparison shop. While you are out shopping and find something you are interested in, you simply just take a picture of the barcode and Amazon will let you know their price for the item.   Easy-peasy.   Check out Amazon Family and get 30-Day Free Trial.

Artkive

With two kids in school, our house can quickly get overcome with school art projects.  The Artkive app lets you save, store, and share all of your child’s artwork within the app. Using your phone’s camera, you can snap a picture of the artwork, and tag it with your child’s name, age, the artwork’s name, and the date it was created.  You can even share the artwork with family and friends.  Such a fun, easy, and clutter-free way to store all of those cute art projects (plus it eliminates any mom guilt for tossing them out).

Waze

This app has saved me so much time since I downloaded it. Waze is a community-based traffic and navigation app that is free to download and use. You can see where there are accidents, hazards, traffic backups, and even speed-traps!  Waze will even redirect you while you are driving if traffic becomes bad which is a huge help!

I love Waze for road trips. You can search for a particular restaurant or store (or anything for that matter) and it will find it along the route. If we are heading to Grandma’s house and need to grab a Starbucks, it will let you know which ones are the quickest and most convenient for your route.  Game changer.

I  know there are other navigation apps out there. However, I  have tested and compared Waze and several other navigation apps and Waze has been the most accurate and efficient every time.

YouTube Kids

Hey, a mom had to do what a mom has to do.  Sometimes when I need to get some stuff done around the house or have my kids behave for 10 minutes while I run into the grocery store, YouTube Kids is my go-to.  As all moms know, traditional YouTube can lead your sweet innocent child down some weird paths. One minute they are watching Paw Patrol videos and before you know it they are watching some strange demon cat cult. The answer to that is YouTube Kids. The content is geared towards kids and I have found there are fewer annoying ads.

Must Have Registry Items for the Working Mom

7 Must Have Registry Items for the Working Mom

You may find this article contains affiliate links. Purchases thru these links support the ongoing efforts DarlingCEO.

I remember walking into the baby store when I was registering for my first baby.  It was such an overwhelming experience. SO. MANY. THINGS.   So many things that I had no idea what they did, who they were for, when I would use them, if I would ever use them, and so on.   It would make wayyyyy more sense for baby showers to be held after moms get some actual mom-ing experience under their belt.  They would realize that you don’t really need 95% of the items that you think you need.

It is best to get advice from a mom who has been there and knows exactly what you will need and not a single thing more. Here are the 7 must-have items for every mom to add to their registry. These items are tested and proven to save you time and effort, which every mom desperately needs!

Ps. Amazon is an amazing place to set up your registry!

An Awesome Diaper Bag

So. Much. Stuff.  Seriously, you have to lug around so much stuff when you have a baby. Having a nice diaper bag with lots of compartments makes transporting the littles a million times easier.  I also highly suggest getting a diaper backpack instead of a bag. We were late to the game with this and I wish we had started using a backpack much earlier.   Having your hands free is clutch.  I love this bag because there are compartments for everything and you can access a lot of the goods without needing to dig around.  The side tissue pocket is life-changing. Who would have thought that one day I would get so excited about a wipe holder on a backpack for when my kids poop their pants.  Ahhhhhh, motherhood.

Milk It Kit- Back to Work Survival Kit

I hated schlepping my pump and pumping supplies around. I loathed washing pump parts and packing your pump bag. Totally not a fan.  Although, my pumping time was amazing.   I got 20 minutes to myself where I could focus on whatever I wanted to focus on.  I was more productive in this time than the entire rest of the day because no one interrupted me.  When I had my pumping sign up people knew to stay away.  It was so very nice.   I love this kit because it has everything you need to set up your pumping session. It includes a door hanger to stop people from walking in, a sign to put on your desk to let people know you will be back, and even tags for your milk so no one uses your breast milk as coffee creamer.

An Extra Car Seat Base

Having an extra car seat base is so very helpful!   We had one in each car and even bought one for my mother-in-law. It just made things so much easier when trying to figure out arrangements for my littles.   You never had to worry about taking out the base and reinstalling it just because you needed your husband to pick up the baby from daycare.  This is also a great price point for your registry. Just make sure that your base works with your particular car seat.

A Fancy Baby Monitor with App

I could stare at my kids all day, they are seriously the cutest. Luckily, there are baby monitors out there that allow you to do just that. Access the stream directly from your phone whenever you want. This monitor also allows you to snap photos or record video of your sweet little snuggle monsters. It also has two-way communication so you can talk to them throughout the day/night.   This ain’t your momma’s baby monitor.  Just make sure you try to get a little bit of work done, it can be tempting to watch your littles all day long,

Recordable Teddy Bear

Use this teddy bear to record a message to your baby so they can hear you whenever they want.  They just give this teddy bear a little squeeze and they will hear your voice. This is great for those littles that miss you while you are gone.  If you can also find time to Skype or Facetime during the day, that will help you both as well.

Manual Breast Pump

For the breastfeeding mommas out there, there will come a time when you forget your pumping parts and you will be stranded at work with painful, exploding boobs.   I kept a manual pump stashed in my desk for those emergency situations. Let me tell you, I had to use it multiple times and it was a lifesaver each time.  This is something that I never realized I would need as a new mom but I figured it out quickly. It’s a must for any registry.

A Few Totes

Seriously, all the totes.   I never thought I would value bags as much until I became a mother. I like to keep bags packed for different purposes. For example, I have a bag for outings to the park, when I drop them off at Grandma’s house, etc.   It just makes it easier to get out the house if you already have most of the things packed and ready to go.  You can have a bag for daycare with all of the essentials (diapers, clothes, toys, blankets. etc.) so that is one less thing that you have to pack each day.   You might as well add them to your registry so that is one less thing that you have to worry about later.

5 Tribe Members that Every Working Mom Must Have

5 Tribe Members that Every Working Mom Must Have

I never understood what “it takes a village” meant. I was very smug in my pre-mom days. I thought parenting was going to be sooooo easy and I was pretty much going to be the best mom ever. Luckily, motherhood is the most humbling experience and the karma train hit me like a ton of bricks. This mom biz is no joke and it definitely takes a (rather large) village to raise these tiny little humans. Having a good mom-tribe is a game-changer.  Here are 5 key-players that every working mom should have in their corner.

Reliable Childcare

It is so important that you reliable and trustworthy childcare.   Do not settle.  Keep searching until you can find someone that loves your kids,  treat them like their own, and are incredibly reliable.  Now, this person may seem like an elusive unicorn, but they are out there. Just keep searching and asking around. You will also want to make sure that they are flexible and provide convenience. You will want to be upfront with your expectations at the very beginning. It is best to have these conversations before emotion is involved. If you have a long commute and may be late a few times now and then, make sure to mention this initially. Make sure the lines of communication are wide open.  At the end of your day, trust your gut. The intuition of a mother is amazing, if something doesn’t feel right, than it probably isn’t right. You should never settle with this tribe member.

Housekeeper

Now, I understand that many people reading this may seem like this is a complete luxury. You are right, it is a luxury, but for a working mom (and really any mom) it is a much-needed luxury. A good housekeeper takes a lot of pressure off of you, even if they come just once a month to do tasks that you never have a chance to get to. For me, I spend my days either working, chasing toddlers around, or picking up legos and Thomas train tracks. That doesn’t leave a lot of time for things like scrubbing floors and cleaning blinds. Then the mom guilt kicks in that I am a horrible wife/mother for having a messy home. You are going to have mom-guilt anyways, I would rather have mom guilt with a clean home. To find a good housekeeper, Try Amazon Home Services. This is an awesome new service by Amazon which allows you to book housekeeping or handyman work through Amazon! You can also ask around and see who others in your area may use. Make sure you are upfront with what you are looking for them to do, how you want them to do it, and when you want them to do it.  I promise you one thing, the feeling when you come home after your housekeeper is there is pure bliss.

Supportive Partner

A supportive partner is a must for a working mom. My husband and I are a great team. He picks up the slack at home when work is a bit crazy for me and I do the same for him. We coordinate schedules so we never really have to miss meetings and important work trips. Now, my husband is still a guy so he still drives me nuts (sorry for any dudes reading this, love you!). Males and females are just totally different. What I have found is that I have to be very explicit with what I need my husband to do. I can’t just ask him to “come home early” I have to ask him to come home at 4:35pm, otherwise he would stroll in 5 minutes earlier than he normally does expecting a badge of honor. Make sure you sit down with your partner once a week to discuss schedules and ask exactly what you need from him. The same rings true for household work. “Dad-clean” and “mom-clean” are going to be very different most of the time. Instead of asking him to clean the house, leave a list of specific tasks that you would like him to do. Nonetheless, a good partner can be a working mom’s savior.

A Working Mom Friend

Every mom needs to have a mom-friend. A mom that understands that you will likely cancel plans at the last minute, that you may not respond to a text message for weeks, and won’t judge you for hiding in the bathroom so you can get a moment to yourself. Working moms experience enough guilt, it is nice to have someone that just gets it. You can plan your playdates around your work schedule (no Tuesday at noon playdates here!) and commiserate about working mom challenges. If your kids are close in age, you can even help each other out. Maybe one a week you trade off babysitting for an evening. That will give you two extra nights a month to catch up with your to-do list or binge-watch Netflix (the better option). If you don’t have a working-mom friend, try hitting up the playground after work. A lot of stay at home moms have already went home for the day so that leaves the working moms. You can even start a working-mom group in your neighborhood to connect with other working moms.

A Great Boss

Working moms need a supportive and empathetic boss. I have been so lucky to have worked for working moms. They are amazing women that have gone through the challenges or being a working mom themselves. They get it. They have been incredibly supportive of my work/life balance and have even pushed me towards home when I needed that nudge. I know I am super lucky though, many people don’t have that support. My advice if you don’t have it is to set expectations and procedures up front. It is much easier to have a conversation about schedule flexibility before you need to take advantage of it. Make sure you keep the lines of communication open and ask for consistent feedback on your performance. You don’t want issues to fester on either side. If your boss continues to be unsupportive, consider finding one that is. More and more companies are becoming more supportive of working moms and there are more opportunities to work than ever. Don’t feel stuck in a negative working situation.

Dear New Mom Returning to Work

Dear New Mom Returning to Work After Baby

Dear New Mom Returning to Work after Baby,

Hello there, new mom. I hope that you are adjusting well to motherhood. It can be one crazy ride.  One minute, you are on top of the world with your heart exploding from love. The very next, you are sitting on the bathroom floor sobbing and missing your old life and self.  Motherhood is a humbling experience.
On top of all of that, you are heading back to work soon. Returning to work after maternity leave is something that all moms dread long before their little one even arrives.   Well, I’m here to tell you that everything will be okay. I Promise.
You were a person before you were a mother. You had your own interests, your own friends, and you own career.  It’s easy to lose yourself when you become a mom, but it is important that you don’t.  Holding on to these things will make you whole and overall a much happier mom to be around. Don’t for one-second buy into the hype that it makes you selfish. A happy and confident mom is better than an unfulfilled and resentful mom any day of the week.
Working will also be beneficial for your marriage.  Truth be told, your spouse will be around a lot longer than your kids (hopefully). Studies show that couples that have dual incomes tend to have fewer fights over finances.  There is less griping about spending money and overall less financial stress. Having your own income puts you at equal footing with your spouse and strengthens your marriage.
Going back to work gives others an opportunity to bond with your children. I am lucky to have my mother-in-law and grandma care for my children when I am working. They cherish their time together and share such an incredible bond.   It has been so special to see. Sometimes I start to get jealous of the special moments that they get to share while I am at work, but I try to force myself that I am giving everyone a precious gift.
If your kids are in a daycare setting, they will have the opportunity to be exposed to different types of children and caregivers.  They will be well-rounded and very adaptable, which are awesome traits to have.
Finally,  you are giving your children an incredible gift.  If you have daughters, you are showing them how to be a strong, confident, and independent woman.  For your sons, you are teaching them that women are capable of being an equal and deserve to have every opportunity that men receive.  Regardless of gender,  you are teaching your children the value of tenacity, grit, hard work and perseverance.
You are modeling how to effectively balance work and home and showing them that they can “have it all”.   Every time you share with them something that you are proud of from work, you show them that pursuing their passion and dreams really does pay off. These are gifts that will last a lifetime and something that you should be very proud of.
In closing, I know that this can be an unbelievably difficult time. Let’s be honest, it really stinks. The first day that you leave your little one, it will feel like your heart is being ripped from your chest. But please know two things 1.) it is much harder for you than it is for your child  2.) it does get easier, I promise!

You are a wonderful mother and are doing the very best for your child. At the end of the day, that is all that matters.

Keep up the great work, Mama!
xoxo,
A fellow working mom

Let’s talk employee engagement... What a lot Let’s talk employee engagement... What a lot of leaders and business owners don’t realize is employee engagement is the #1 factor in business success. You can have the best product, in the best market, but if you don’t have engaged and committed employees, you can only go so far. Just think of the most successful companies- sure, they may have an awesome product or value-prop. But what likely sets them apart is a group of dedicated employees that are committed to the work and bringing that vision to life. For example- let’s look at Disney. Disney world is a theme park. There are plenty of theme parks. But who is behind the scene creating that Disney magic? Engaged employees actively seeking out opportunities to delight and wow their guests. When you are thinking about how to grow your business- first assess your own and your team’s engagement. Do you have a vision and mission that is easy to understand and follow? Do you make it easy for employees to bring this vision to life? Do you listen and empathize with them? Starting with those questions will ensure that you have the most powerful tool in good working order, which will multiply your success. What is a time that you have been engaged at work? Do you feel that it improved your performance and ultimately the success of your company?
Just think about it- every single failure you have Just think about it- every single failure you have experienced made you wiser. Failure makes you more resilient, stronger, more resourceful. What has been the biggest lesson you have learned from failure?
Learning this more each year! Learning this more each year!
I always try to remind myself of this in the darke I always try to remind myself of this in the darkest of times.
Sometimes you just have to dig your heels in and g Sometimes you just have to dig your heels in and get dirty. However, when you struggle the reward is that much sweeter. ..Tell us a time that you really struggled for something. What was the reward?
