5 Ways to Lift Others Up at Work

I truly believe the sign of a strong influential leader is the ability and willingness to lift up those around them.  The strongest people I know are constantly looking for ways to teach, inspire, and advocate for others.
Here are five ways that you can grow yourself by growing others:

Offer to Mentor

Check to see if your company has a formal mentoring program that you can take advantage of.If your company doesn’t have one, check out potentially spearheading one (Check out this article from Inc. for more details How to Start a Mentoring Program).  If not, reach out to someone that you see has a lot of potential that you can help develop.  Ask them if they would like to form a mentoring relationship.    Ideally, you would have someone approach you for this but often times employees can be intimated by more experienced members of the organization.  Undoubtedly they will feel honored and relieved that you approached them!

Offer to be a Guest Speaker

There are a ton of ways that you can share your expertise and experience via speaking.  Check around for employee business resource groups or clubs. These groups are always looking for speakers to engage their members.   Ask another area of your organization if they would like to learn more about you and your particular line of business.   Look for opportunities with the local Girl Scout groups or other youth organizations.  Not only will speaking give you the opportunity to help others and lift them up, but it will help you expand your professional network and hone your public speaking skills.

Always Coach and Add Value

Some of the best advice I ever received came from people that were not my boss at the time. Always be on the lookout for coaching opportunities with those people around you.   Of course, it is critical that you do this in the most delicate and respectful way or you run the risk of developing a reputation for being overly-critical and insensitive. People need to know that you are coming from a good place and have their best interests in mind. Always be looking to provide value and help others.

Recognize Others

Human beings have a deep need to feel valued and loved.  Recognition is a great way to make others feel this way.   Find ways to recognize those that deserve it.   Often times it as simple as a shout-out at a meeting or a handwritten thank you card.  Just think of how you feel after you receive encouragement- like you can conquer the world. How awesome is it that we have the opportunity to make others feel that way every single day.

Formal Learning

There are so many ways to formalize your teaching. You can develop an e-book,  online course,  podcasts, blogs, the opportunities are endless! These methods allow you to gain a much greater reach to help others.   Find a topic that you are passionate about and share it with the world!

Now get out there and change the world!   I would love to hear how you have been able to lift up others or ways that others have lifted you up. Please share in the comments below.

Love this! I have always believed that being a good listener is a way to open up opportunities to coach as people will often share with you and ask advice!

Wonderful advice! So many people are looking for a little bit of guidance and are too shy to ask! A mentoring program would be a great, no pressure start!

I love participating in a mentoring program. I swear I learn more then they do and it really forces you to analyze your own actions. Thanks so much for reading!

It really is but it takes a lot of focus and effort. I myself am so guilty of looking straight at the bottom of reports. It takes a conscious effort. Thanks so much for reading!

I love #4. It is easy to get so focused on our own work we forget to lift our heads up and see those around us. Recognizing others lifts us all up!

    Thanks for a good read.
I’m a big fan of number 2, 3 and 4. At my last school we had an office door where there would be posted new compliments everyday, for us to take and give to a classmate. A small thing that worked wonders.

Great suggestions on how to bring more positive energy to our work spaces. Some of my favorite fellow teachers and coworkers are those who always have nice things to say about others (even when they aren’t around), and coach me in a heartfelt way when they see that I am struggling. – Amy

That is awesome. A kind word goes a long way. Even if someone is not performing that well, I always look for ways to recognize them for something. I firmly believe that you need to give others a reputation to uphold. Thank you so much for reading and commenting!

This was an amazing post! I’ve worked in so many offices where the leadership was severely lacking, yet couldn’t understand why productivity and morale was down. The best leaders are the ones who take the time to help others in areas they are needing it, praise them for their accomplishments, never take credit for work accomplished by the team, and just overall seem approachable.

Yes! Yes! Yes! I couldn’t agree more. At the end of the day, a team that likes you as a person will do whatever it takes for you to win. It’s not rocket science. Thank you so much for reading and for sharing.

Let’s talk employee engagement... What a lot Let’s talk employee engagement... What a lot of leaders and business owners don’t realize is employee engagement is the #1 factor in business success. You can have the best product, in the best market, but if you don’t have engaged and committed employees, you can only go so far. Just think of the most successful companies- sure, they may have an awesome product or value-prop. But what likely sets them apart is a group of dedicated employees that are committed to the work and bringing that vision to life. For example- let’s look at Disney. Disney world is a theme park. There are plenty of theme parks. But who is behind the scene creating that Disney magic? Engaged employees actively seeking out opportunities to delight and wow their guests. When you are thinking about how to grow your business- first assess your own and your team’s engagement. Do you have a vision and mission that is easy to understand and follow? Do you make it easy for employees to bring this vision to life? Do you listen and empathize with them? Starting with those questions will ensure that you have the most powerful tool in good working order, which will multiply your success. What is a time that you have been engaged at work? Do you feel that it improved your performance and ultimately the success of your company?
Just think about it- every single failure you have Just think about it- every single failure you have experienced made you wiser. Failure makes you more resilient, stronger, more resourceful. What has been the biggest lesson you have learned from failure?
Learning this more each year! Learning this more each year!
I always try to remind myself of this in the darke I always try to remind myself of this in the darkest of times.
Sometimes you just have to dig your heels in and g Sometimes you just have to dig your heels in and get dirty. However, when you struggle the reward is that much sweeter. ..Tell us a time that you really struggled for something. What was the reward?
